Generation No. 1
1. ZACHARIAH BULLOCH14 STACY (AARON13, BENEDICT12, JOHN11,
SIMON10, JOSEPH9, SYMON8, JOHN7, SIMON6, THOMAS5, THOMAS4, THOMAS3, JOHN2,
RICHARD1 STACE) was born 1786 in Brunswicke County, Virginia, and died
March 25, 1857 in Burke County, N.C.. He married CATHERINE WHITENER March
19, 1814 in Lincoln County, N.C., John Stacy as bondsman and Vardry McBee
as witness., daughter of DANIEL WHITENER and MARY WILFONG. She was born
January 08, 1793 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, and died May 06, 1868
in Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina.
Notes for ZACHARIAH BULLOCH STACY:
The final resting place of Zachariah is unknown to us. He may have been
buried on his own land, but the history of his family suggests that
Zachariah was buried in consecrated ground. Pleasant Hill Baptist Church
was not founded until after the death of Zachariah. A proposed new marker
for his grave will read:
Zachariah Bulloch Stacy, Esquire
Judge of the Lincoln County court
1786 - 25 March 1857
The Court Records on Lincoln County list numerous instances of Zachariah
as Judge at Court. He witnessed many deeds, wills and land sale transactions.
On at least one occasion Zachariah was a defendant:
1 October 1827 Lincoln County, N.C. Superoir Court of Law
Zachariah Stacy in a disagreement with Polly Trafenstadt "with a strong
hand did enter" the house and pull down part of the roof and the chimney,
as well as part of the wall.
Our Judge Stacy had lost his temper! He was fined $13.84, with G.D.
Wilfong, as his security.
Zachariah and his family moved from Lincoln County to Iredell County in the
1830's and were in the Burke County by the 1840 Census.
Because of the burning of the books and papers of the Burke County, N.C.
Courthouse, which were set afire in the Courthouse yard, we know little
about the Stacy family, except that they settled in the area of Silver Creek.

Notes for CATHERINE WHITENER:
Catherine grew up in her native community of what was then Lincoln County,
N.C. which was formed in 1799 from the former lands of Bladen and Anson
County. In 1842 , this same land became known as Catawba County, N.C.
Catherine was named for her grandmother, Catherina (Mull) Weidner.
Along with her four sisters and six brothers, they did household chores,
tended the land and livestock, cleared the lands and made clothes for the
family. Life was very hard for them, but there were good times also, such
as log rollings, barn raisings, quilting parties and dances.
When she married Zachariah, they moved to Burke County, where they settled
down to raise their family of eleven children. Zachariah was a
schoolteacher and at that time was not paid much money so they were also
farmers.
Catherine Whitener Stacy was a lovely, kind, Christian lady, for on her
tombstone the entire 23rd Psalm was carved by hand. Sadly, only a piece of
her tombstone still stands.

BRITTAIN HAWKINS 1846 in Lincoln County, N.C., son of AARON HAWKINS and
TEMPERANCE BRADSHAW. He was born September 22, 1822 in Lovelady Ford,

County, North Carolina.

Notes for HARRISON BRITTAIN HAWKINS:
While he took a very active interest in politics, Britt never asked for
office. He served throughout the Civil War on the Confederate side. Known
all over the county as "Uncle Britt", Harrison Brittain Hawkins was a
friend to everyone. His great love for talking and singing was matched by
his ability in both.
20 March 1864: H.B. Hawkins enlisted in Co. A, 6th Reg't, N.C. Troops, at
Camp Holmes. He was with his unit until August.
17 August 1864: H.B. Hawkins was a patient in the C.S.A. Hospital at
Charlottesville, Va., suffering from debilities. He was returned to his
unit 18 August 1864 in Lynchburg, Va.. where he remained until January of
1865.
17 January 1865 H.B. Hawkins was court martialed!
Brent Hawkins recalled two different times when Britt's life was spared.
During the Confederate War, soldiers who left the army to go home were
hanged. Britt had gone home to Burke County to be with his wife who was
awaiting the birth of a child.
After his return to his unit, Britt and a fellow soldier soon were riding
to their executions on their coffins. The fellow was hanged and Britt was
to be next. Just in time a messenger ran up and told the men the president
said not to kill any more men, because they were needed to fight. Britt
was put on the front lines to fight. He came home at the end of the war
unharmed.
Confederate records list H.B. Hawkins as five feet six and 3/4 inches tall,
with florid complection, blue-gray eyes, and dark brown hair.
Confederate Records on file at the National Archives:
25 March 1865: H.B. Hawkins was captured near Petersburg, Va. and taken to
the Union Prison at City Point, Va., then transferred to Point Lookout, Md.
(I will have an article on Point Lookout in another section)
27 June 1865: H.B. Hawkins was released from Point Lookout, Md. after
signing the Oath of Allegiance.
Elmer Brittain, who remembered that Britt was a great one to sing, said,
"In the summertime he and Aunt Cindy and my grandparents would sit on the
back porch and sing hymns. We would be hoeing corn, and you know, you
could hear those songs all the way across the mountain, and it was so hard
to hoe corn.
Elmer Brittain recalled two different times when Britt Hawkins life was
spared. During the Confederate War, soldiers who left the army to go home
were hanged. Britt had gone to his home in Burke County to be with his
wife awaiting the birth of their child. After his return, he and a fellow
soldier soon were riding to their executions on their coffins. The fellow
was hanged and Uncle Britt was to be next. About that time, a messinger
ran up and told the men that the president said not to kill any more men
because they were needed to fight. Harrison Brittain Hawkins' life was
saved and he was put up on the front lines. He came home at the end of the
war unharmed.
Another time, Britt and Little Peter Mull were on the side of the mountain
hoeing corn when a bad storm blew up. At one side of the field was a big
chestnut tree that had been burned out by a forest fire, so the two men got
out of the rain by crawling in the tree hollow. The storm got worse and a
bolt of lightning ran down the big tree and killed Little Peter, while
Britt, sitting next to him, wasn't hurt.
After a while Britt ran across the field into Elmer's fathers house. He
caught Elmer's brother and began pulling at him. Elmer's mother knew that
something was wrong, and since Britt couldn't talk, she told the boy to go
with him. He took the boy to where Little Peter lay dead.
Britt Hawkins died June 18, 1906, at eighty-four, after a sickness lasting
only two weeks. He had fallen, taken the flux and then developed typhoid
fever. Having been a faithful member of the Baptist Church for sixty-two
years, his last words were, "I am ready for my Masters call." He is
buried
at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at Enola, Burke County, N.C.

Death of H.B. Hawkins
Known all over the County as "Uncle Britt"
H.B. Hawkins died 18 June 1906 at 1:40 a.m., after reaching the ripe old
age of three score and twenty-four years. His sickness lasted only two
weeks. He first received a fall, and then took the flux, which ran into
typhoid fever.
Mr. Hawkins belonged to one of the oldest and most distinguished families
in N.C. His Great Uncle Benjamin was on the staff of George Washington and
was the first Senator from North Carolina. Austin, his grandfather, moved
to Burke County, N.C. in 1760 from Virginia and married Phoeba Brittain, a
sister to the distinguished Marcus Brittain. Austin (Augustine) B.H.
Hawkins was born in Burke County, N.C. and married Temperance Bradshaw.
H. B. Hawkins was married to Lucinda Stacy in 1848, and five children
survive them - J.P., J.B., and W.J.[B.] Hawkins, Mrs. E.H. Poteet and Mrs.
D.A. Cook. Thirty-nine grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren
are left to mourn their loss.
Mr. Hawkins was a consistent member of the Baptist Church for sixty-two
years. He was generous, gentle, and kind, and after a life of eighty-four
years, departs without a known enemy.
His body was committed to the earth at Enola in the presence of a large
concourse of friends and relatives, and his soul has been wafted back to
the mercies and tender graces of the God who gave it.

Notes for HENRY GORDON COOK:
Brothers Henry and Frank lived in a house on Medlin Road on the place we
farmed. Mother (Annie Williams) would always fix food for them about every
day and some of us children would take it to them. When we moved from the
farm, Aunt Manie, their sister built them a small house in Lee Park,
Monroe, N.C. near us. Mother continued to cook for them and see that they
were taken care of. Some of my fondest memories of childhood are of the
stories Uncle Henry used to tell us. When some of us children would take
them food, Henry would often sit on the front porch and eat and we would
sit in the yard near one of the prettiest rose bushes I have ever seen and
listen as he would tell us tales of our ancestors. He would tell of great
sea captains of England, fighting for the King or Queen. He would talk of
frontier men fighting Indians. He would tell us to always remember and be
proud of our family . I enjoyed his tales and often dreamed of them. In
the back of my mind I thought I must be kin to the great explorer Captain
Cook, but when I started researching the Hawkins family, I realized Henry
was probably telling us about them also.
Henry was a talented musician with his banjo! What a treat it was to sit
and listen to him pick that banjo. In my research I have found that the
Hawkins family was very talented in music. Uncle Henry and Uncle Frank
both seem to have had this talent handed down to them! Henry was very
well educated and was interested in genealogy and wanted to make sure we
knew of our ancestors. I only wish I had been a little older and could
have been able to remember all the things he used to tell us! When he died
he had in his posession the book "COOK HISTORY AND GENEALOGY" by Rev.
Earle
Cook.

Notes for FRANK COOK:
Frank was the baby of the family. He was very well educated . When he was
a young man he had so much promise! He was a pilot and I have been told
he had his own plane. He had a natural talent at the piano. I don't know
if he ever took lessons or not, but even in his later years, he could make
a piano talk!! In what we know as the roaring 20's Frank lived a wild life
along with so many others. The story goes that he contacted a disease and
there was no cure back then and his mind was affected. He was a gentle
person and he kept to himself all the rest of his life. He lost everything
he owned and moved in with his brother Henry. They were two old bachelors
and they more or less kept to themselves. They lived in a tenant house on
our farm and their sister (Aunt Manie) and others provided for their
needs. My mother would send a meal to them every day. Uncle Henry loved
to talk to people who visited but Frank would just sit around and laugh
quietly to himself. And yet if we would meet Frank anywhere (and he would
often walk into town) he would always call our name and say "Hello".
Occasionally he would come into our house or my sisters house and play the
piano for a while and then say "Bye" and go home. He never lost his
love
for music!
I have a special place in my heart for this gentle man and often visit his
grave. It is so sad to think about what his life could have been had he
taken a different direction in his youth.

in Morganton, North Carolina. She married W. T. BRITTIAN. He was born
Abt. 1877 in Morganton, Burke County, N.C..
Notes for MAMIE LOUISE COOK:
Aunt Manie lived in Morganton, N.C. I guess she had already married when
her family came to Union County, so she stayed in the mountains. After her
husband, William Brittain died, she used to visit often for weeks at a time
and she would always stay at our house. I remember our drinking water came
from a well and Aunt Manie would not drink it . We always had to walk
about a mile to a friend's house to get her town water every day. She
lived in a very nice brick home in Morganton. We used to visit her often.
During the depression, her two sons went to New York. They sold apples
from a homemade wooden wheelbarrow on Wall Street. When the stock market
crashed, they were able to get seats on The Wall Street Stock Market and
struck it rich when the depression ended. They became millionaires.
Aunt Manie is buried on the side of a mountain just outside of Morganton.

There is some dispute as to Charles middle name. While some of the family
use Elmore, his death certificate and the marker on his grave list him as
Charles H. Strawn. I was in my late teens when he died and I always knew
him as Charles Henry. This was the name he used. Everyone called him
"Charlie" Henry Strawn but probably his real name was Charles
Elmore.

Notes for GRADY VALENTINE WILLIAMS:
Grady, like his father, also had a talent at playing a fiddle. I can
remember as a small child how he would take down his fiddle and play. Then
one day he never played again. I remember the fiddle lay on top of the
piano for years and was silent. I also remember the day Aunt Alice Strawn
was helping Mother clean the house. She moved the piano to sweep behind it
and Dad's fiddle fell to the floor and broke into pieces. Mother picked up
the pieces and put them up and I never heard Dad's fiddle mentioned again.
Many years later, shortly before we lost Mother, one Sunday she started
talking about Dad and his fiddle. She said our sister Alice was always
wanting to hear Dad play his fiddle and he loved to play it for her.
Mother said after Alice died Dad could never let himself play the fiddle
again. It was like something in his heart died with Alice. When Mother
told me this, I remembered the smile that lit up Daddy's face as he lay in
the hospital just before we lost him. I feel that beyond a shadow of a
doubt Dad was smiling at Alice as she met him to welcome him into heaven.
Maybe today he is playing music for Alice in heaven!
