(1) After Sir William Berkeley consented to commission Nathaniel Bacon as general in June, 1676, the General Assembly passed an act to carry on the war with the Indians, proportioning the men and provisions among the counties. Middlesex was required to furnish thirty-six men. The whole number was to be a thousand. All the counties proceeded to comply with these demands, but Berkeley plunged the country into civil war by rescinding Bacon's commission and proclaiming him a rebel. ---------- 180 WILLIAM AND MARY COLLEGE QUARTERLY.
