1.            John I Redman/Redmond b. 1620/23, Westmoreland County, VA,[1] m. bef 1656, in Virginia,[2] Mary Harris, b. 1640, Westmoreland County, VA,2  d. ca 1704, Westmoreland County, VA.  John died 1673, Westmoreland County, VA.2

1655 - "John Redman first appears in records of Westmoreland County, VA on 01-Oct-1655 when he was deeded land by Thomas Youell and George Day (D&W 1/17).  He was born 1620/23 as he gave his age in a deposition in Oct 1655 as 32 (D&W 1653/9 P/43), but in a later deposition of Dec 14, 1670, he gave his age as 50 years old (D&W 1665/77 P/107b).  He may have been a son of a John Reddman, aged 46, who came to Virginia on The Globe in 1635 (Hotten P/121), or a John Redman, merchant of London, who, with John Neale, was granted an island in Accomack Bay called Smith's Island in 1637 (Nugent P/55).

"He also owned land in St. Mary's County, MD, half a mill and 550 acres, which was deeded him by William Browne of St. Mary's County in Jan 1, 1663/4 (Arch. of MD, Vol 49 P/572).  He died in Westmoreland County, VA in 1673.  His will, dated Mar 2,1672/3 and probated Jun 25, 1673, leaves all his property to his wife, Mary, and his children (no names given) (D&W 1665/77 P/151a).  The wife, Mary Redman, was born in 1640, as she gave her age as 20 in a deposition Feb 2, 1660/1 (D&W 1661/2 P/34).  John Redman had at least three sons, Peter, John, and Solomon Redman.  Peter was the eldest son, born about 1656-8, as his father made him a deed of gift Jul 30, 1659 (D&W 1653-59 P/139).  He died unmarried in Westmoreland County early in 1685 and his brothers, Solomon and John Redman, being appointed his administrators Feb 25, 1684/5 (O.B. 1675/6-1688/9 P/385).  After his brother’s (Peter) death, John Redman was the eldest son and heir.  He was born in 1667.  Solomon Redman, the third son, was born about 1669/70," per Historical Southern Families’ (Vol X11) “Thornton of Virginia” by John Boddie

Three sons listed by Historical Southern Families’ (Vol X11) “Thornton of Virginia by John Boddie: Peter, John, and Solomon.  Robert was listed by another source and may not be correct.

Mary: "Mary Redman, widow of John Redman, was still a widow Sep 26, 1673 (D&W 1665-77 P/163a), but was married (2) to Edward Franklin by Apr 20, 1675. The will of John Harris, dated Apr 20 and probated 30-Jun-1675, makes Edward Franklin (son-in-law) his executor and mentions his son John and Mary fforeside, ‘my late wife's daughter’ and in case of the son's death, half his property to Mary Franklin and her children, and half to Mary fforeside (same P/239).  The son, John Harris did die and Mrs. Franklin and Mary fforeside inherited the property, for which Mary fforeside signed a release to Edward Franklin 18-Nov-1689, but soon after this, she married John Spencer, who sued Franklin 07-Apr-1693 to get what he regarded as still due from the Harris inheritance (O.B. 1690-98 P/93a).

"The above will may indicate that Mary Redman Franklin was a sister of John Harris, or possibly a sister of his wife and an aunt of Mary fforeside.  There is the possibility, too, that she was connected with the Sturman family, for John Redman was deeded land by Thomas Youell (who married Anne, daughter of the immigrant Thomas Sturman) in 1655.  John Redman, her son, after a suit against his mother and her second husband, Edward Franklin, in 1685, chose Major Thomas Youell (Anne Sturman Youell's son) as guardian (O.B. 1675/6 PP/425/6), and John Sturman (b. 1650, grandson of Thomas Sturman) was one of the Trustees of Edward Franklin's will (O.B. 1698-1705 P/24).  Edward Franklin, second husband of Mary Redman, was a Justice of Westmoreland County from 1680 until his death in 1694 (O.B. 1675/6-1688/9 P/183), was for some time keeper of Nominy ferry (PP/175,194), and was Sheriff of Westmoreland County in 1692 (O.B. 1690-98 PP/57a, 89).  He was born in 1636 (Northumberland Rec. BK 1666-72 P/17).  He died in Westmoreland County early in 1694, leaving a will (now lost) of which Mrs. Mary Franklin, the widow, and Mrs. Frances Franklin, his daughter, were executors (O.B. 1690-98 P/120 Feb 28, 1693/4).  Mrs. Franklin requested a division of the estate between herself and her five children (some of them being of age) on Feb 24, 1696/7, and the request was granted (same, P/229).  One Feb 22, 1698/9 John Sturman, John Redman, and Joseph Hudson were asked whether they would accept their trusteeship under Edward Franklin's will, and the division of the estate was ordered May 30, 1699 (O.B. 1698-1705 PP/24, 36a).  Four of the five Franklin children seem to have been: (1) Frances Franklin (certainly), the eldest daughter; (2) Philip Franklin, who appears briefly in 1699 (O.B. 1698-1705 PP/40a, 55a); (3) Thomas Franklin, who married a daughter of William Stewart, and (4) Mary Franklin, mentioned briefly in 1707 (O.B. 1705-21 P/48).  Mary Franklin, the widow, married (3) prior to Mar 30, 1704, as his second wife, William Moxley, Sr., on which date they sued John Redman for her dower in her first husband's land, and were granted it Sep 27, 1704, since ‘the sd. Mary has enjoyed in nigh 25 years’ (O.B. 1698-1705 PP/224, 244).  It is uncertain whether a Mary Franklin who is mentioned Dec 30, 1703 was the mother or the daughter (same P/212).  At any rate, Mary Redman Franklin Moxley probably died soon after 1704, certainly prior to Feb 22, 1721/2, when William Moxley, Sr. (who must have been extremely old) made a deed to his son, Samuel, with no mention of a wife (D&W 7 P/270)," per Historical Southern Families’ (Vol X11) “Thornton of Virginia by John Boddie.

            2.      i    Peter Redman/Redmond b. 1656/8, Westmoreland County, VA,1  d. 1685, Westmoreland County, VA.2   "Father made him a deed of gift 30-Jul-1659 (D&W 1653/9 P/139).  Died early in 1685, was single, and his brothers, John and Solomon, were appointed his administrators 25-Feb-1684/5 (O.B. 1675/6-1688/9 P/385)," per Historical Southern Families’ (Vol X11) “Thornton of Virginia” by John Boddie.

Apparently moved from Westmoreland, VA to St. Mary's County, MD about 1720, along with his nephew, John Redman, and was guardian and uncle of John, Solomon, and Henry Redman, brothers; children of his brother, Solomon.  In 1720, John Redman or his son, John, was accused of instigating Mrs. Rebecca Chilton's slaves to burn her boat.  This is when they moved to St. Mary's County, MD, where John still owned the land bought by his father in 1664.  On 27-Sep-1720, John Redman deeded his land in Westmoreland County to his son, Thomas Redman, which was to descend successively to his son, Vincent, then to his daughter, Sarah, and finally to his daughter, Elizabeth.

"Solomon Redman, the third son, was born about 1669/70, and was married by Sep 27,1693 to Ann, on which date he and his wife acknowledged a deed of gift to his brother, John Redman (probably some claim he had from his father's will to the Redman land (O.B. 1690/98 PP/104, 111).  Solomon Redman died in Westmoreland County in 1698 and his widow, Ann Redman, being appointed his administratrix Jun 29, 1698 (O.B. 1698/1705 P/8a).  She was still a widow Jun 7, 1699 (Richmond Co. O.B. 2, P/414), but married soon afterwards, Thomas Simmons, and was dead by Feb 26, 1707/8, when Simmons was sued for the orphans, John, Solomon, and Henry Redman, by their uncle and guardian, John Redman (O.B. 1705-21 PP/80a, 103a, and 107).  Of these three sons, John Redman seems to have moved to St. Mary's County, MD about 1720 with his uncle, John Redman, and to be identical with a John Redman who died there in 1736, Mentioning son John, daughter Sarah, and daughter Pricilla Hoskins (probably wife of Aaron Hoskins (Haskins), who is mentioned in connection with the estate) (Maryland Calendar of Wills Vol VII P/191).  Solomon Redman, son of Solomon Redman, died unmarried in Westmoreland County in 1719, his next of kin (i.e., brother, one would suppose), being his administrator (O.B. 1705-21 P/369a and D&W #6 PP/502 and 602).  Henry Redman on Feb 25, 1718/19 summoned John Redman (either his uncle or his brother) to answer his petition regarding his inheritance, apparently being just of age, so born 1697/8 (O.B. 1705-21 P/361a).  There is no further trace of him in the records," per Historical Southern Families’ (Vol X11) “Thornton of Virginia” by John Boddie.

Ann: On 27-Sep-1693 Solomon and Ann acknowledged a deed of gift to John Redman, Solomon's brother (O.B. 1690/98, PP/104,111).  Ann Redman was appointed administratrix 29-Jun-1698 of Solomon's will (O.B. 1698-1705 P/8a).  She was a widow 07-Jun-1699 (Richmond Co. O.B. 2, P/414), but soon married Thomas Simmons and was dead by 26-Feb-1707/8, when Simmons was sued for orphans, John, Solomon, and Henry Redman (O.B. 1705/21 PP/80a, 103a, and 107) by their uncle and guardian, John Redmond.

Aaron: 1699 - St. Mary's County Will Abstracts 1638-1800; John Haskins, 12th Feb 1699: To son John and hrs., 100 A., Westberry.  To dau. Sarah Doxee, personalty.  To wife Sarah, extx and residuary legatee.  Test: Wm. Gibson, Dan'l Hanley, Wm. Roach. 6.381.  (Could this John Haskins be Aaron’s father?  Aaron would then have a mother and sister named Sarah and then names a daughter Sarah?  Or could the son, John, who shows up later with Aaron, be Aaron’s father?  This could be Aaron’s grandfather and the son, John, listed here his father, since this John does not name Aaron in this will).

1736 - Named as the executor of John Redman's will (father-in-law): Abstract of Maryland Calendar of Wills sent by Dennis Stacey; P/191, 21.667: Redman (Readman), John, St. Mary's Co., 6th Sep 1736 - 4th Oct 1736.  To Phillip Key, the New Design, Prince George Co., bou. of Ignatius Wheeler, sd. tract to be sold at discretion of sd.          1759 - Prerogative Court Abstract: 09-Dec-1759 (Liber 101-114 excerpt only): In the Inventories is a list of the debts due to the estate of Phillip Key.  The inventory was filed in St. Mary's County and has Aaron Haskins, John Haskins (the son of the above 1699 John Haskins and prob brother/father to Aaron)? John Stacey, Bennet Stacey, Mrs. Mary Haskins, with about 600 other names listed.  Also listed are names of Richard Bullock, John Bullock, William Bullock, and George Bullock.

1767 - Aaron Haskins 93.114 SM L28.10.4.  21-Nov-1766 to 25-Jun-1767, Appraisers: James Bullock and John Bullock.  Creditors: James Jordan and Thomas Bond.  Next of kin: Thomas Noales (Noaks/Noakes), Bennet (Slarey) Stacey.  Administratrix:  Priscilla Haskins.

1767 - Maryland Hall of Records - Inventories #93, FF/114-117. St. Mary's County, 01-May-1767 #95, F/23: Bennet Stacey listed as nearest of kin, along with Thomas Noaks (Noakes), in the inventory of Aaron Haskins, deceased. (Note: Inventory of Estate of Aaron Haskins; wife, Priscilla Redmond; appraised by James Bullock and John Bullock; approved by nearest of kin).  I have a copy of the inventories, Vol 95 PP/33, 114-117, and transcriptions of court documents, sworn before Sam'l Abell Junr, where Priscilla Haskins appeared in court on 02-Jun-1767.  A later transcription by Genealogy.com, found by Dennis Stacey in records from Maryland's early Prerogative Courts above, transcribed this as follows: 01-May-1767, Aaron Haskins 93.114 SM L28.10.4, Appraisers: James Bullock, John Bullock.  Creditors: James Jordan, Thomas Bond.  Next of kin: Thomas Noales (Noaks/Noakes), Bennett Slarey (Stacey).  Administratrix: Priscilla Haskins.  This later transcription mutilated the names of Noaks and Stacey.  Listed in Prerogative Court Abstracts, 1766-1769, P/25.

                         Children:

            129.    I    Sarah Haskins/Hoskins b. ca 1735, Maryland, m. ca 1748, in Prob Maryland, Benedict Stacy/Stacey, b. 19-Dec-1725, Maryland, (son of John Stacy/Stacey and Anne Unknown) d. bef 1810, Prob Lincoln County, NC.  Sarah died bef 1787, Prob Brunswick County, VA.  Sarah died after 1776 (Brunswick County, VA) and before census in 1787 in Brunswick County, VA.

Benedict: A record of birth was found in California for Benedict Stacy/Stacey by Becky Madruga; however, the MF# she gave was incorrect.  I have a copy of the birth record and his parent's names were John and Ann.  It has not been determined which John Stacy/Stacey this is.  We are now in process of trying to locate the record to see if we can find the parish that it came from.  There is no evidence to connect Benedict to parents as yet.  A definite linkage cannot be made until this record on Benedict is rediscovered and this means we are going to have to go through all the microfiche records on Maryland to find it.  If you see Benedict connected to any ancestors, please beware, he was placed there as guesswork!  We believe the John Stacey who witnessed the will of Thomas Cooke, planter, in St. Mary's County in 1715 is Benedict's father.  A John Stassy was involved in a court judgement in 1716 and probably the same John Stacey.  This John Stacey would have to born ca 1694 or before and the most likely to be Benedict's father.

"The Stacye/Stacy/Stacey ancestral home and church are in Handsworth, Sheffield (Yorkshire), England.  The old Manor House, Ballifield Hall, where the Stacyes lived for 600 years, is still in good condition.  An ancient mulberry tree in the garden is still bearing fruit.  Nearby, the Parish Church of St. Mary's, Handsworth, contains memorials and arms of the family.  At the East End of the church are graves of many members of the family.  Stacy family records can be seen at the Rectory.  The Victoria and Albert Museum have many items presented by Rev. E. V. Stacy," per C. Ray Stacy.  The Handsworth Genealogy Society notified me that Ballifield is now a Children's Home and the only large estate left in that area.

"Benedict was born in Maryland, married Sarah Haskins, also born in Maryland, and had issue of several children; Benjamin, who aided and supported the American Revolutionary War, married Elizabeth Browder; Aaron, who served in the American Revolutionary War, married Nancy Bullock; John, who died while serving the American Revolutionary cause; Elisha, Mark, and maybe four sisters.  The Stacys migrated from Maryland to Lincoln County, North Carolina, and finally to Tennessee," per C. Ray Stacy.

Note: 1737 - C. Ray Stacy says the Bullocks (land), Haskins, and Stacys were in the Hopewell Forest area of St. Mary's County, MD.  Cannot find records for the Hopewell Forest area.

                      Numbered Records from Dennis Stacey:

1/1759 - Prerogative Court Abstract: 09-Dec-1759 (Liber 101-114 excerpt only): In the Inventories is a list of the debts due to the estate of Phillip Key.  The inventory was filed in St. Mary's County and has Aaron Haskins, John Haskins, John Stacey, Bennet Stacey, and Mrs. Mary Haskins, with about 600 other names listed.  Also listed are names of Richard Bullock, John Bullock, William Bullock, and George Bullock.

Note: From the Compendium of American Genealogy (Vol VII) by Virkus: "Key, Phillip (1696-1764), from Eng. ca 1720, settled in St. Mary's Co., Md.; mem. Lower House of Md. Assembly several sessions; High Sheriff 1744-45; mem. Council 1763-64 (apparently right up until he died in 1764), m Susanna, dau. John Gardiner (desc. Richard Gardiner, of St. Mary's Co. Md.) m 2d, Theodosia (Lawrence) Trumphries."

Note: If Mary, who m. Edmond Caruthers, is indeed Lucretia, then Benedict Stacy may have been in North Carolina in 1766, much earlier than previously documented.  We believe the Mary in Cannon and Rutherford Counties, TN, who married Edmond Caruthers, is Lucretia Stacy, probable daughter of Benedict.  TN Mortality Schedule has her born in NC and could be an error.  See info under Edmond and Mary Lucretia Stacy.

2/1767 - Aaron Haskins 93.114 SM L28.10.4.  21-Nov-1766 to 25-Jun-1767, Appraisers: James Bullock and John Bullock.  Creditors: James Jordan and Thomas Bond.  Next of kin: Thomas Noales (Noaks/Noakes), Bennet (Slarey) Stacey.  Administratrix:  Priscilla Haskins.

3/1769 - Prerogative Court Inventories: (Liber 102 I, Fol 114-123): Richard Chew, Anne Arundel County, Maryland State archives taken 30-Oct-1769 SR 4365 CHEW 1769.  An Inventory of the Goods, Chattels, Rights, and Credits belonging to the Estate of Richard Chew, late of Ann Arundel County, deceased, as appraised in current money, money of this province, this thirtieth day of October, one thousand seven hundred and sixty nine.  (Excerpt) John Stacey 80 and Bennet Stacey 665 1. 0. 7.  (Appears to be a list for Storage of Tobacco Currency.  Tobacco was used as currency when credit was obtained locally by a farmer between ship arrivals).

(I have a transcription of this deed).
