Notes for ROBERT BULLOCK, SR.:

ROBERT BULLOCK 'LORD OF ERBURGFELD'

Robert was the successor of Gilbert and is known to have been trustee for the Crown (Edward II) of certain land in Barkham. The land was supposed to have orginally belonged to John Mautravers and was forfeited by him to the King, along with other possessions. Agnes (Anne) de Neville claimed to have been wrongly dispossessed of this land by Mautravers. She was successful in her claim and Robert Bullock was authorized to make the land over to her in 1335. Robert Bullock is referred to as "Lord of Erburghfeld" in 1331 and this is the earliest indication that the Bullock family held the Lordship of the Manor of Arborfield. In 1341 Robert settled the manor on his son Robert and Joan Drokensford, his wife.

(This info is from the "Memoirs of the Family of Bullock" written by Rev. Llewellyn C. W. Bullock and is found on the Miller & Bullock Family Tree).

Notes for GILBERT BULLOCK:

GILBERT BULLOCK OF HERBURGHFIELD

Gilbert Bullock was a son of Robert, Lord of Arborfield. He brought home a wife from the neighbouring hamlet of Barkham, namely Anne (or Agnes) Nevill who was daughter and heir of Thomas Nevill of Barkham. They were married in 1330. This was the same Anne to whom Robert Bullock was to make over land in 1335. It is believed that through this marriage the Bullocks acquired the Lordship of Barkham, although they seemed to have interests there long before this. In 1341 the manor of Arborfield it appears, was settled on Gilbert's brother Robert.

In 1343 Gilbert Bullock is known to have presented John de Insuia as new rector of Barkham Church.

Twice during the reign of Richard II in 1385 and 1392, Robert was Sheriff for the counties of Berkshire and Oxfordshire, while in 1394 he was the Commission of Peace for Oxfordshire. In 1388 it is on record that "Robert Bullock of Eberfeld, late Sheriff of Oxford", received a pardon from the King for the excape of a prisoner from Oxford Gaol. A few years previousely in 1382 his name occurs as witness to a deed in which he is described as "Lord of Erburghfeld and Hurst", just half a century after the title "Lord of Erburghfeld" had been similarly applied to his grandfather. It is believed that Robert the Sheriff married Margaret Foxley, daughter of Sr. John Foxley of Bray and Barnshill, Knight of the Shire for Berks. Robert is thought to have died in 1405.

Gilbert and Margaret had at lease six children, their eldest son and heir being Thomas. THOMAS BULLOCK OF ARBERFIELD, ESQ.

Thomas Bullock was the eldest son and heir of Gilbert and Margaret. He was Lord of the manors of Arborfield and Barkham by 1514 and was married to Alice, a daughter of John Kingsmill of Hampshire (who was a Justice of the Court of Common Place in the reighn of Henry VIII). It is believed that Thomas and Alice had seven sons and six daughters. Thomas later married again to Agnes, who survived him. Thomas was appointed a Gentleman Usher Extraordinary to the King (Henry VIII) in 1516 and his name appears on the Royal Household list. A few years later he was appointed as one of the Commissioners for the County of Berkshire to collect the subsidy which was levied by Henry VIIIin 1544. Thomas Bullock was returned among the Nobles and Gentry of England who supplied men and horses for the war with France. His contingent consisted of "archers eight, and billmen thirteen". At this time a change was made in the family crest and it is not improbable that the "seven bills" were granted to him in allusion to this martial aid to his sovereign in time of war. By his will of 1557, Thomas made a number of bequests which included "to Barkham Church, a pair of white satin vestments embroidered with a red velvet cross" to Arborfield Church "all such ornaments vestments and coopes all which I bought of Thomas Champyon". For the relief of the poore of Barkham. a direction that Barkham Court should be leased to his widow, Agnes, and the poor of Swallowfield parish also benefited under his will.

WILLIAM BULLOCK OF STRATFIELD MORTIMER, BERKSHIRE, ENGLAND.

William Bullock of Stratfield, Mortimer. Berkshire, son of Thomas and Alice, and uncle to Thomas, Last of Arborfield. At some time between 1530 - 1540 (?) William Bullock of Stratfield Mortimer married his thrid wife, Elizabeth Bellett, thought to have been the daughter of John Bellet of Moreton, Cheshire. This marriage was destined to restore the fortunes of the Bullock family. In the latter part of the 16th century, William Bullock's eldest son, John, took up his residence at the Manor House of Mulsham, in Great Wigborough and this established the Essex branch of the family which for at least three centuries was the chief representative of the old Arborfield stock.

From the "Memoirs of the Family of Bullock" written by Rev. Llewelyn C. W. Bullock and the Family Tree of Miller and Bullock.

Note----he was married 3 times before dying at age 24 dates and born dates for some of his children were after he died. (I question the dates????? and believe he died much later as he susposely had children born 1562, 1565, and 1568 by his third wife).

THOMAS BULLOCK OF ABERFIELD, ESQ. SHERIFF OF BERKSHIRE

Born circa 1546, son of Richard and Alice Bullock. He suceeded his father to the manors of Arborfied and Barkham and married Dorothy, daughter of the William Forster of Aldermaston. It is thought that they remained childless.

In 1581 Thomas was an agent of the Crown of Oxon, and Berks, and he also served as High Sheriff of Berkshire in 1581/2. In 1574 Thomas leased the site and demense of the manor of Barkham to his brother, William for 21 years at #15.00 per year. By 1589 a heavy accumulation of debts, some monies being owed to Queen Elizabeth 1, it is believed forced Thomas to sell the two manors for #4,000. The lordship of Arborfield and Berkham, together with 2,200 acres (78% of the two parishes) were sold to Edmond Standen, Clerk of the Petty Bag of the Court of Chancery. It is thought that they were sold subject to a lease back to Thomas for the rest of his life at a rent of #150 per annum. Thomas died at 48 years of age in circa 1595. He was the last of the Bullocks resident i nthe old home in Arborfield, where the family had been seated for more than four centuries. The sale of the manors to Edmond Standen was strongly disputed by members of the Bullock family and initially by William Bullock of Barkham, brother and legal heir of Thomas. The disputes resulted in a multiplicity of law suits and the matter was not settled finally for seventy three years, until 1662, in favor of the Standens.

Worth Ray in his book on Granville County, NC and its people has this to say about Thomas Bullock:

Thomas Bullock, believed to have been another son of Hugh Bullock, was living in Lower Norfolk County (Virginia) in 1640 and was then 28 years of age, from which we figure he was born about 1612. He died in Isle of Wight County (Virginia) about 1695, leaving three sons, William, John and Thomas Bullock. Thomas Bullock was the ancestor of the Isle of Wight County Bullocks, who overflowed into North Carolina and whose descendants are all mixed up now with their Granville County (NC) cousins, so that it is hard to identify them.

This Thomas Bullock died without leaving a will and on August 9, 1695, his estate was appraised in Isle of Wight County (Virginia) by Jacob Darten, Simon Endrett ans Will Murfres. His son, Thomas Bullock only the day previously - Aug 8, 1695 - had helped to appraise the estate of Henry Allen, whose widow Mary he had married. The son Thomas Bullock left a will in the Lowere Parish of Isle of Wight, January 25, 17090/10 (WB 2 page 529).

Notes for JOHN BULLOCK:

Lancashire Parish Register Society (LPRS) has John Bullock baptism on February 9th, 1633 (this is baptism --not Birth). LPRS says John Bullock, son of Richard Bullock of Walegate (Wallgate) christened 9 Feb. 1633. I have a copy of the Parish record in my files.

In the Will Of John Mackart Vol.1, p.174 Maryland calender of Wills by Jane Baldwin, John Mackart left to Elizabeth, dtr of John Bullock, personality. John Mackart's will was made Jan 11, 1675, and proved Apr 17, 1676, therefore there had to

be a John Bullock with children before 1675. Dr. Lois Green Carr Mem's Career Files has that John Mackart left 1 cow to Elizabeth Bullock. I find no proof that John Bullock may have married a Mackart other than being Adm. of the Estate of John Mackart and that in the will John Mackart left to Elizabeth. dtr. of John Bullock (proof may be found in generations back from this one--and not yet researched).

Will of John Bullock Nov. 27, 1700, St. Mary's County, Maryland has: To son John Bullock the land I purchased of Lionel Oakley known as "Oakley", to son William Bullock the land in forrest of St. Mary's County called "Hopewell". His son-in-law John Adkee (could be Attaway) was to live on the plantation during the term of three years. In event of the death of son John, without issue, to pass to daughter Elizabeth Alvey. In event of the death of son William, without issue, to pass to daughter Elizabeth Alway. John Bullock administered his fathers estate on 10/3/1707, valued at t49.00.00. Dr. Lois Green Car Men's Career Files has the Oakely Land at 100 acres. on St. Clements Manor.

She has Thomas Oakley owning it and handed down to Lionel Oakley---she believe it was purchased from Tobias Bayley, prob. in 1666

Will of Lyonell Oakley (father is Thomas Oakley of SMC), 1688, St. Mary's County Maryland leaves to sister Ann Oakley, sister Elizabeth Oakley, sister Mary Oakley and INDENTURED John Bullock. LDS records says John Bullock married an Oakley---I find no proof other than John Bullock bought the land known by the name of Oakley and was Adm. of the will of Lyonell Oakley. Proof may be found in generations back from this one (not yet researched).

One source says John Bullock was the brother of Frances Bullock:, who's will in St. Mary's County, Maryland, left to his Mother Jane of England.

John Bullock an Anglican, entered the Province of Maryland in 1659 as a servant.

He obtained through his marriage to Unknown Assister; 150 acres of "Hopewell" from William Assister and wife Ann. John Bullock has his residence at "Oakley" on the west side of St. Clement's Bay. The only proof that I found for John Bullock being married to Unknown Assiter is that he received from William Assiter and wife Ann (Ann is the second wife for William Assiter) --- 150 acres and at the same time William Assiter and wife Ann gave 200 acres to William's son Robert (by his first wife as in the will of Ann she calls Robert her step-son). Proof may be found in generations back from this one (not yet researched).

Linda Reno's information has John Bullock's wife as Margaret (Margaret Assister). I got no response on where the name Margaret came from.

John Bullock transported to St. Mary's Co., Maryland in 1656. Freeholder on St. Clement's Manor (grant to Thomas Garrard). John Bullock's papers were signed in December 1659 by Thomas Garrard. Dec. 2, 1659, Thomas Gerard records rights for John Bullock, servant. (I believe John Bullock knew Thomas Garrard and the Garrard Family before his coming to America as they too were from Wigan, Lancashire, England)

On the Indentured Servants Basic Search Results for Bristol, England, for Record Identification Number ===266 John Bullocke, male, Occupation: laborer, Place of Origin: Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, date of indenture: September 24, 1656 for 4 years, destination: Virgina, Agent's name: William Wakely.

Archives Nov. 1689, pg. 132. John Bullock is a signatory of the adress to the King assuring him of the loyalty of the inhabitants of Calvert Co. Apparently he is literate, because the clerk has not notated that he signed with his mark, as he did with other illiterates.

Maryland Eastern Shore Vital Records 1648-1725 for St. Peter Parish, Talbor County list a John Bullock, died march 05, 1702. (Can not connect to my John Bullock).

Granville County. SS February Court, A.D. 1783. This will was duly proved by the oath of John Brodie and ordered to be recorded then Jeremiah Bullock and Joshua Bullock quallified as executors to the said Will. Asa Searcy, Clerk of Court.

From History and Genealogies of old Granville County, NC 1746-1800 by Owen, has July 20, 1770. James Bullock & Wm. Oglevie, searchers "for the Nap of Reed & Dutch Districts".

Notice that appeared in the Butner and Oxford Papers on May 3rd, 2001 asking for help in identifying the two tomestones--one has been identified as James Bullock

His tombstone has been found with J B K (James BullocK) as the 1st. line. N R 8 (November 8) as the 2nd line and the third line is 1782--he died 2 days after writing his will. There must be 100 plus graves in this Cemetery from the stones that mark the graves and the grave indentions--in a pasture that some say is the old Waldo Minor farm (in 2002 its the Heads Up Horse Stables and Riding Academy) and about half of the graves are inside the horse pasture, the rest being betwen the fence and Tally Ho Road. The road is dirt in April 2002 and has been staked for paving.

The nearest houses are 1692 and 1704 Tally Ho Road and the cemetery is located across the road and between these two addresses. A big "Thank You" to Mildred Currin Goss who showed me the tombstone for James Bullock in April 2002.

More About JAMES BULLOCK:

Burial: A Family Cemetery on Tally Ho Road on the old Waldo Minor farm (now Heads-up Horse Farm).

Notes for SARAH WEBB:

Sarah Webb is said to be the sister of Chief Justice Rowan's wife.

What kin is Sarah Webb to John Webb and Thomas Webb from Essex Co., Va. and in Granville Co., N. C.?????? They may be the sons of William Webb.

iv. WILLIAM BULLOCK, b. 1725, Oakley, St. Mary's Co., Maryland.

v. MARGARET BULLOCK, b. 1717, Oakley, St. Mary's Co., Maryland; m. (1) JAMES VOWLES; b. 1694, St. Mary's Co., Maryland; d. Bef. 22 Mar 1723/24, St. Mary's Co., Maryland; m. (2) CHARLES GRIFFIN, Abt. 1725, St. Mary's County, Maryland.

Notes for MARGARET BULLOCK:

I believe she was born eariler than 1727 as she was married in the will of her father in 1736.

John Bullock died in 1736 and names his daughter Margaret (Bullock Vowles) Griffin.

Margaret Griffin was named as a next of kin in the inventory of her father-in-law John Vowles.

Notes for JAMES VOWLES:

The web site where I got James Vowles from has him d 3/22/1723 and this would be 4 years before Margaret was born.

Found on the Internet--Early Md. Vowles Focuments posted by Bob Moore:

Inventories 10, pp 418-20 (or 21), 3 July 1725. Total 217.3.10 1/2. Taken by M (?) Thompson, John Bould. Nearest of kin: In behalfe of my two sons John Bullock, Margaret Bullock (I don't understand what this means as it is written In behalfe of my two sons John Bullock, Margaret Bullock). (Donnelly says that this Margaret Bullock (in James Vowells will) is the SINGLE daughter of John Bullock I and the AUNT of his wife)

From FTM CD #206

Prerogative Court Records Abstracts 1724-1727, Mr. James Vowel St. Mary's Co., Md. March 22, 1724, probate Jul 3, 1725, Appraisers: M. Thompson, John Bould

Creditors" Thomas McWilliams, Francis Loyd.

Next of Kin: Margrett Bullock for the 2 sons (unnamed) of John Bullock.

Administrator: John Vowles.

(Note from Barbara Elliott in ref to above--I am not sure that this Margaret is the correct Margaret Bullock that married John Vowles---could the above Court Record prove that she may be a sister to the John Bullock who has a will probated in 1705 and to Richard Bullock who may be a brother to both of them????? since it say for the 2 sons of John Bullock) .

On 5/18/1719 James Vowles with John Bullock and Richard Gates witnessed the will of Thomas Kendeloe.

vi. RICHARD BULLOCK, b. 1729, Oakley, St. Mary's Co., Maryland; m. MARY MITCHELL.

Notes for RICHARD BULLOCK:

I found a Richard Bullock that married Mary Mitchell in SMC. Could it be this Richard??

Richard Bullock served as a Private and enlisted in the Co. of the Flying Camp, 7/28/1776.
